Pyxides in the sarmatian Barbaricum of the Carpathian basin

A tanulmány a Kárpátmedencei szarmata temetkezések egy nem jellegzetes és eddig kevéssé kutatott elemével, a pixisekkel foglalkozik. A pixis egy univerzális tároló alkalmatosság, mely fából, csontból és fémből egyaránt készülhetett. Belsejében általában különféle szerves anyagokat – festékeket, növényeket – és kisebb tárgyakat tároltak. Gyakran a kapszulákkal együtt tárgyalják őket és azok változatainak tekintik, habár a hasonlóságok ellenére nem tartoznak ugyanabba a kategóriába. E tégelyek beható vizsgálata eddig hiányzott és csak egyegy cikkhez kapcsolódó kisebb gyűjtésre került sor. Ezért a szakirodalomban is számtalan megnevezésével találkozhatunk: tégely, tartály, doboz, szelence stb. A pixisek kapcsán mégis az egyik legfontosabb kérdés a funkció volt. Felmerült a tárgy apotropaikus és profán jellege, de az eddigi kutatás erre nem szolgált pontos válasszal. A pixisekkel kapcsolatos alábbi kérdésekre igyekszem válaszolni: a nem/életkor szerinti megoszlás; a forma, alapanyag, kialakítás, díszítés; a sírban lévő elhelyezkedés; a pixiseket kísérő leletanyag.

This paper looks into a rather unusual and less researched element of the Sarmatian burial rituals in the Carpathian Basin called the pyxis. Pyxis is a universal storage item that could be made of wood, bone or metal. It was used to hold different organic materials such as dyes, plants, and smaller objects. It is often mentioned together with capsules and is regarded to be a variation of it, however, despite the similarities, they do not belong to the same category. There was a lack of an extensive study of these items and they were mentioned only in relation to less considerable collections in certain articles. For this reason, it has been referred to in various ways in literature such as pot, container, box, case, etc. Another important aspect regarding pyxides was their function. It might have had an apotropaic and profane role, however, there is no exact answer on this question. In my paper, I wish to fill in this hiatus while answering the questions that arose. In my study, I have been collecting and categorising the Sarmatian pyxides that had been found in the Barbaricum area of the Carpathian Basin. I analysed their common features and their positions inside the tombs. I also touched upon the burial rituals, the ratio of the sexes and ages, and I also put emphasis on the research of the grave-goods accompanying pixides that has not been mentioned in the previous re-searches so far. I have divided several groups and types and I identified their positions in time and space in the Carpathian Basin and Europe.
